Something to Consider ~Social Networking and the Creative

To Like or Not to Like
Nexus Café – Season Two – Episode 3
July 26, 2015

“Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.”
John Wooden

These days, it is all too easy to sacrifice quality for quantity. Social Networking requires constant content to stay relevant. For the artist, the drive to produce often means their work suffers.  There is no denying that connecting with like minded creators the world over is amazing BUT can all too often be addictive. Relationships fostered, have become much like the work being produced. Again, a question of sacrificing the quality of the relationships we’re building over the quantity of relationships we’ve found ourselves trying to keep alive.

I’ve spent a huge amount of time I could have spent writing, producing crap quotations and sharing and promoting the work of others who are trying to build a name for themselves.  Often, I have found myself sharing work I may find inferior or not to my liking, for the sake of returning a like or a share. Other times, I have promoted others fiercly, in the hopes the action might be returned, never to receive so much as a thank you, let alone  support of my own work.  I was paying very little attention to the quality of the relationships I was building, and my work, not to mention my heart, suffered for it.

It’s important to remember it’s real people on the other end of the connections we are making (no matter the name they give you) Real people are subject to a host of personality types and it is so vital we don’t take their rejections personally.  To quote a popular facebook share…Not everyone has the same heart as you.

No matter the quality of work you’re producing, if you dedicate hours a day to your networking platforms, your numbers are going to grow. Likes will increase. Shares will too. But are you willing to forgo the passion that drives you to create to see something you wouldn’t have dreamed of showing the world a year or two ago? It belittles the purpose of creating. Those divine moments when our passions connect us to a part of the world’s magic that is forgotten in numbers and popularity contests.

“With fame, you can't trust everybody. You can't depend on them being there for you as a person. They will only be there because of what you've got and what you can bring to their life. It's not a relationship-it's a leech.”
Chris Brown

Don’t let the leech suck the creativity out of you.  Return to the notebooks, the canvas, the crayons.  Create with integrity and let your work speak for itself. Don’t be manipulated by trends, hashtags, and marketing ploys to snag your hard won dollars in order to be seen. Know the game that’s being played and let your work speak for you.  The rewards of my poetry are so much sweeter when I haven’t pimped the soul out of it. When a stranger who owes me nothing stumbles upon a blog post and is kind enough to share…simply because it spoke to them.
Use the platforms as tools…not life lines. Share your work…don’t sell your soul.

“The definition of success to me is not necessarily a price tag, not fame, but having a good life, and being able to say I did the right thing at the end of the day.”
Jeremy Luke

Creative Finder – A social network for and by creatives

This week I’d like to share this up and coming social network for creatives, Creative Finder.  It’s a professional social network just like LinkedIn. You not only create a portfolio of your work, you enter your CV or resume as well as awards and people with whom you have worked.

TIP: If you have fully filled out your LinkedIn profile just enter that link in the resume/CV area of your Creative Finder profile.

Creative Finder has been around for three years and earlier this year it revamped its layout. Like any social network you can follow others and like what they share. You can also find creatives to hire or as a creative, find a job in the job listings. And Creative Finder is well hooked into all the popular social networks.

TIP: Be sure to connect to your other social networks. You do this by hovering your cursor over “My account” which brings up a menu. You'll see “Connect to social networks” at the bottom of that menu.

Creative Finder is not as smooth as LinkedIn or the other social networks. It does still have some growing to do, but I think it’s another great venue for visual artists to connect with potential buyers, employers as well as fans.

Let’s Endorse One Another on LinkedIn

Over the past couple of months LinkedIn has made a lot of changes. This week’s tip has to do with the improved personal profiles, specifically the new “Endorsements” feature.

In the “Skills and Expertise” section of your profile the skills you have listed have been turned into clickable buttons. When someone clicks on one of your particular skills it counts as an endorsement. If you have “Poetry” listed on your profile as a skill all your connections can click on it and endorse you. When someone is checking out your profile they’ll see that you are a poet loved by many.

Even though this feature isn't connected to LinkedIn search it is still important. It lets the world know more about you in a way that shows that others respect your gifts and talents. It’s simpler than having someone write a recommendation and its impact can be greater if you have 100 endorsements for a particular skill. And I'm sure that at some point it will be connected to their search.

So if you haven’t filled out the “Skills and Expertise” section of your profile on LinkedIn get over there and do it now. And be sure to visit your friends and endorse their skills because that’s what we do here at the New World Creative Union.

How to get a Google+1 button on your blog

The Google+1 button is an important addition to your website and blog. The Google+1 button is like the Facebook “Like” button, except it gets into Google searches. And Google reaches millions. “Asked which search engine they use most often, 83% of search users say Google.  The next most cited search engine is Yahoo, mentioned by just 6% of search users.”  (Pew Internet Research)

Here’s how you can get that important little Google+1 button:

Blogger: Go to “Design” in Blogger and click on “Layout” and then click on the “Edit” in the left hand corner of the “Blog Posts” rectangle. Another menu pops up. Scroll down and you’ll see a box you can check next to “Show Share Buttons.” Click and save. Now every blog post will carry the share buttons including the Google+1 button.

Wordpress or website: There is a code for the Google+1 button you can pick up from the Google Developers site. Choose the size and language and then copy the code it gives you. You can then paste it your HTML code box or in the footer. There are also plug-ins for Wordpress to do this for you. It’s suggested you add one to every page of your blog or website.

Autumn online cleaning

Spring and autumn cleaning don’t only apply to your house; they apply to your online home spaces as well. Time passes and before we know it changes have happened in our lives that aren't reflected in our online profiles. This means it’s important to make the rounds at least a couple times of year to clean things up.

Here’s a list of the things you might want to check:

First, make a list of all the social networks you belong to. Think hard, there may be some you don’t use anymore. If that is the case you might want to delete them.

Make sure the links you used work.

Is your current job the same as you have listed?

Did you finish school, get another degree, win an award or get certificated in something since you last posted to your profile description? Be sure to get it all in there.

Update your contact info. Do you have the same email or web address?

Clean up your website too. Make sure all the links work and that all the information listed there is current.

Check to see if you have Google+ and Facebook Like buttons on each page of your website and that all of your social profiles are represented there as well.

Happy Autumn cleaning!! Enjoy this new season!
