A Collage to Close the Year 

A collage is a putting together of different pieces of art to create something new. I want you to use any of your own creative work from 2012 to create something that sums up 2012 for you. 

If you only write then cull your poems and stories to create a cento, a poetic form that takes lines from other poems to create a new one. 

If you only sculpt take one shape on each of your sculptures and create a new one or use Photoshop to create a collage of your work…get creative in your presentation…look at things from different angles. 

If you’re a musician create a remix or medley of your pieces. 

If you work in many mediums you can use Photoshop to create a collage and or groupings in one blog post.

Just show me your 2012 using your own work in a new way.

The other great thing about this prompt is that you’ll see how much you accomplished creatively this year.

NWCU Autumn Surprises

Now that we are in the midst of seasonal change, so too, is the New World Creative Union! As you are well aware, Natasha and I are regularly encouraging everyone to explore new forms of artistic expression. If you are a writer, we say, "...try sketching, or drawing, or painting, to expand your artistic expression." In other words, just do something different, even if you may not particularly care for what you create at first. Just try something new! Think about this, is a person being 'truly' creative, when he or she is doing the same thing over and over again?

Therefore, heeding our own advice, we are exploring some new paths and forms of expression for the NWCU. Natasha and I have decided that these changes will start at the time of the Autumnal Equinox, which arrives this year on Saturday, September 22nd. Our NWCU kick-off will be Sunday, September 23rd.

The Autumnal Equinox, also known as Mabon or the Festival of the Harvest, indicates the year is winding down. Named after the Welsh God Mabon, the festival is basically one of celebrating the harvest and thanksgiving.

This year, our first year, has been a very interesting and exciting one, and we do indeed, have something to celebrate. Actually, it has been quite remarkable, and we do appreciate those of you who have been participating in our Wednesday Wake-Up Call activity, posting your work, as well as 'sharing' and 'promoting' the work of other artists; that's what the NWCU is all about.

So, here's a little peek ahead at 'some' of the things we have in store:

on Eugen Herrigel's Zen and the Art of Archery.

is Monty Wheeler

(aka @bumfuzzled2004)

Monty Wheeler takes home the NWCU Award for Creativity designate, for 01.08.12, and his composition "The Perfect Storm."

His philosophy about writing, is that “poetry can be just plain fun,” and may be seen in his compositions.

Monty's formal education included courses in meter and rhyme at Arkansas Tech University.

When not writing, Monty is involved in hunting in the woodland he calls a playground or fishing the area's smaller lakes or his own family ponds.

Monty has been a very strong advocate for the NWCU and our Wednesday Wake-Up Call. We sincerely appreciate his efforts on behalf of the NWCU, as well as, 'sharing' and 'promoting' other artist's work, which is a core component of the NWCU.

Congratulations are in order for  Steve Piper  who once again takes home the NWCU Award for Creativity, making him our first three time designate.

Steve is our 3rd, 8th and 12th place winner, and, therefore, receives a badge with a 'star' to designate this honour! You may read Steve's winning compositon, I Dream Still by clicking on the link!

Steve resides in Paduca, Kentucky, where he is COO of Iron Anchor Tattoos. He is also a United States Army Veteran (SSG), grandfather, musician, poet, Progressive Democrat, songwriter, and political activist.

[Navajo Sand Painting: Alvina Begay]

Native American sand paintings are a very beautiful and popular art form for collectors today. Traditionally, the dry paintings are created to heal a person during a ceremony.  The type of image and ceremony used is determined by the illness or disease from which the person is suffering.  The sand painting may contain an image of the Holy People called yeibicheii.  The tribe medicine man may ask the yeibicheii to help him paint the image and therefore help heal the person in need.  The medicine man also checks the sand painting for accuracy as far as symmetry is concerned.  The more accurate the sand painting, the more healing it can do.

Here is an opportunity for you to design and make your very own interpretation of a Native American sand painting. Enjoy! Explore! Create!

Show Us Your Butterflies!

Last week when I put the call out for ideas for this weeks Wake Up...the voice of a constant supporter came through loud and clear. Steve Piper (thumbs up big time!) brought forth how often we as writers and creators look to certain items for constant inspiration.  An example he used that I LOVED was the moon.  Right now, if I asked you to run and grab a piece of your work inspired by the moon, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have to wait too long.

The same can be said for butterflies...look at Susie Clevenger  our own Butterfly Poet...these light-filled, flying canvasses have been inspiration for so many, and this week...we'd like to see how they've inspire you!

There are some images below to help prompt your pen...but the sky's the limit and we're granting you butterfly wings.

There are many movements that are attempting to address the various problems of our people and planet these days. Wednesday Wake~Up Call 16.05.12

~Oceans of Creativity~

Wouldn't it be fantastic if we were all waking up to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, and the glare of the morning sun sparkling on the water.  I've yet to meet a person that is NOT inspired by a moment at the beach, a picnic on a bluff overlooking the ocean, or a day spent sailing.  Today, let's pretend we are waking to the sound of waves.  Let's find that moment that makes us realize while we are physically minute in the grand scheme of things, our spirits are able to surf the crest of those waves to the heart of inspiration.

Today, I want to go all multi-media.  Listen to the sound of the waves, contemplate the photo's, or simply ponder what our oceans mean to you.  Coming from a province that is exploring off-shore drilling in a partnership with Shell...I truly am concerned for the well being of my home, lovingly referred to as Canada's Ocean Playground.
